Dear See Beyond Family,

With the international outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) continuing to create daily headlines, many people may have concerns and questions. The world health community is closely monitoring the emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus named “coronavirus disease 2019” (COVID-19).  At this time, no one knows how severe this outbreak will be. Given this uncertainty, and the fact that the seasonal influenza (flu) virus is also widespread, we are taking proactive steps to address our patients’ concerns and offer guidance.

SeeBeyond Medicine does not believe there is the reason for alarm, but we do want to reach out with some key information in order to best prepare ourselves. It’s also a good time to reflect on Pasteur’s reported last words – and let’s do everything possible to ensure our immune system is in tiptop shape. Here’s a great overview by Dr. Mark Hyman on Supporting Your Immune System. Schedule a virtual visit with us today to devise your own personalized plan.

As always, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website remains your best source for up-to-date, detailed information about COVID-19.

It is important to remember that the fundamental advice about COVID-19 and how to protect yourself remains the same:

  • The vast majority of people who contract COVID-19 will not require hospitalization; symptoms are often mild enough that one can recover at home. If you have flu-like symptoms, please do not come to work, but you only need to seek medical care if you develop life-threatening conditions like severe shortness of breath, changes in mental status, severe dehydration, or other complications.
  • If you do exhibit flu-like symptoms, such as respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath or breathing difficulties, please err on the side of caution and self-quarantine at home (ideally, until you are cleared by a healthcare provider to return to work).

Contact us or your other healthcare providers for more advice and call ahead if you plan to seek medical care.

Recommendations for everyone regarding respiratory illnesses, including flu as well as COVID-19:

Stay home when you are sick. If possible, stay home so you can rest and recover. This also helps prevent you from passing the illness on to others.

If you have not traveled to an area where COVID-19 is prevalent or been in close contact with a traveler, and you develop respiratory symptoms, it remains likely that you have a seasonal illness like the flu rather than COVID-19.

Wash your hands: Basic hand washing for at least 20 seconds with soap and water can prevent the spread of germs. If you cannot wash your hands frequently throughout the day, using an alcohol based hand sanitizer works as well.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth: Germs spread quickly this way.

Cover coughs and sneezes: Use a tissue to cover coughs and sneezes, then follow by hand washing. If you do not have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow to present the spread of germs.

Clean and disinfect surfaces frequently: Frequently clean shared objects or surfaces with disinfectants. Some examples are cell phones, light switches, door knobs, and workstations.

Facemasks: The CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19; facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of these diseases to help prevent the spread of the disease to others.

Medical Care: If you need to seek medical care for a respiratory illness, please call ahead to your health care provider and put on a face mask upon arriving at the facility.

PREVENTION is everything.

If you are traveling internationally:

If you are traveling anywhere internationally, consider using the U.S. Department of State Smart Traveler Enrollment Program for updates on health and safety issues abroad.

For work-related international travel, please review this information about travel safety and how to register your trip.

Check the CDC’s list of affected countries, as well as the State Department’s travel advisories, before embarking on your trip. The travel advisories may change from day to day so check them often. Be prepared to cancel your trip, especially if the government recommends against non-essential travel.

Anyone who has traveled within the last 14 days to countries with sustained community transmission of COVID-19 should be screened. As of today, those countries are China (including Hong Kong and Macau), Iran, Italy, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, but please check the CDC’s list periodically for updates.
